What Makes Implant-Supported Dentures so Great?

Patients who are missing several neighboring teeth or an entire dental arch are candidates for implant-supported dentures. Where traditional dentures simply sit on top of the gums, implant-supported dentures are embedded directly into the jawbone, replacing both teeth and tooth roots. Not only do implants prevent dentures from slipping out of place, many of our patients report that implant-supported dentures feel and function like natural teeth.

If you are looking for a qualified dentist to provide you with implant-supported dentures, look no further than Dr. Matthew A. Turner D.D.S., PC, who has served the Kansas City, MO, community since 1991. He and his team are dedicated to providing the most advanced care possible. To this end, they complete over 100 hours of continuing education every two years to ensure they are using the most up-to-date techniques.

Because implant-supported dentures are attached directly to the jawbone, they are often much more durable than traditional options.

Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures

There are many restorative and cosmetic benefits to implant-supported dentures. According to the National Institutes of Health, up to 95 percent of implants last for the long-term. Furthermore, implant-supported dentures offer peace of mind and freedom from embarrassing denture slipping and shifting during casual conversation and meals. Implant-retained dentures will never slip because they are anchored directly to the jawbone.

Once you have undergone dental implant placement at our Kansas City dental clinic, you can enjoy benefits such as:

  • Improved clarity and ease of speech
  • Reduced gum tissue irritation
  • Secure prosthetic that will not shift
  • Boosted self-confidence and comfort when speaking or eating in public
  • Permanent solution to tooth loss
  • Improved bite balance
  • Wider range of dietary options

Are You a Candidate?

If you are missing several neighboring teeth or an entire arch of teeth, you may be a good candidate for implant-supported dentures. Many of our patients who had frustrations with traditional dentures have sought the benefits and stability of implants. Patients should be in good overall health and free of medical conditions that may compromise healing and recovery.

Before Dr. Turner places any implants, however, he will need to determine if you have adequate jawbone density to under receive the titanium posts. If you do not have sufficient jawbone mass, you may need to undergo a bone graft or sinus lift.

A Look at the Procedure

After your candidacy has been established, a date will be set for your outpatient surgery. During the surgery, you will be sedated and local anesthesia will be applied to the treatment area with our advanced WAND to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Turner can then make incisions in the gums, through which implants will be inserted into the jawbone. Afterward, any incisions will be sutured closed.

Although the implant-supported denture process requires several months, it is an investment in your long-term oral health.

The procedure can typically be performed in an hour or two. Following the procedure, you should return home to rest for the remainder of the day. While swelling and discomfort are to be expected, most patients are able to resume normal activities within one or two days.

Once your implants have healed, a minor surgery will be scheduled to place small metal devices called abutments. These serve as the point of attachment for your restoration. Once you have fully healed from this second procedure, you can come in to your receive your final denture.
